Robb Design Portfolio: Altitude Adjustment

Colorado’s Ecosse Moto Works (www.ecossemoto.com) builds its new X-9 Titanium 29er bicycle the same way it makes its motorcycles: tailor-made to each buyer’s bodily proportions. The mountain bike—Ecosse’s first nonmotorized two-wheeler—takes its name from the company’s X-series concept motorcycles and from the bike’s titanium frame and all-terrain 29-inch tires. The titanium used for the X-9’s bottom bracket, billets, and rear dropouts is the same Grade 5 material found on several of Ecosse’s motorcycles. Additional performance-enhancing details include the large wheels (which eliminate the need for a full suspension and keep the bike lighter), a relatively short fork offset length, and a steep head tube engraved with the company’s bestial logo. Ecosse delivered the first (pictured) of 25 X-9s to a customer in May. Prices for the bicycles range from $8,500 to $15,000, depending on the level of customization.
