Peter Michael Winery’s tremendous influence on winemaking in the past quarter century happened by accident. Sir Peter Michael, a Renaissance man and entrepreneur who founded United Engineering Industries, a pioneer in digital broadcast technologies, had always planned to own a vineyard in Bordeaux or Burgundy. Then, while on a business trip to San Francisco, he wandered up to Sonoma County’s Knights Valley, where he was struck by the austere rocky soil of a particular mountainside property. He became convinced that this terroir was perfect for making wine to compete with France’s grand châteaux.
Decades of great vintages produced by some of California’s most gifted winemakers—Helen Turley, Mark Aubert, and Luc Morlet, whose brother, Nicolas, recently succeeded him—have proven him right.
