Best Of The Best 2006: All In The Family

Paul Dean

The Audi Q7 is a capable, luxurious, seven-passenger vehicle pitched squarely among the best SUVs, but it has significant variations that include an optional (and frugal) 3-liter diesel engine. It also has Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive system—but not four-wheel drive with an extra set of low gears for boulder crawling, because, say the SUV’s builders, what is good for Land Rover is not exactly Audi’s way. And if its appearance is similar to that of a VW Touareg or a Porsche Cayenne, well, that is a family resemblance between vehicles that share a parent company and many quality parts—including a 350 hp V-8 and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

From its deep chrome dickey of a front grille through a cabin with the space of a loft to small innovations such as a front-to-rear sunroof, the $50,000 Q7 is undeniably an Audi. And this means that the vehicle offers quality, luxury, convenience, comfort, performance, security, and subtleties that prevent a good SUV from ever being crassly classified as a truck.
