Best Of The Best 2006: Viva La Vega

At a tasting of Vega Sicilia’s Unico at Valentino restaurant in Los Angeles earlier this year, 10 collectors of this most prized label from Ribera del Duero arrived, each carrying one precious vintage of Unico from his cellar. The array included such gems as the 1968 (astounding, graceful, and still youthful), the 1989 (fragrant and powerful), and the 1991 (floral and ripe with amazing depth of fruit). The Vega Sicilia 1994 Unico, Ribera del Duero showed silky texture but still expressed a dense fleshiness on the palate, overlaid with spice tones and styled with superb balance. The 1995 vintage arrives in the United States this year.
