Exclusive Hideaways: Bure-d Treasure

There are no roads, cars, or airports on Qamea. The island—the 12th largest in the heavily trafficked Fiji archipelago—comprises just a handful of rustic villages. Anchored along the northern perimeter of the 330-island nation—and accessible only by boat—it is void of solicitors, day-trippers, and, with one exception, resorts.

The Qamea Resort and Spa, the only lodging option on the island, is a casual South Pacific retreat set on a mile-long white-sand beach. The resort accommodates just 24 guests in 12 traditional bures, thatched-roof bungalows with covered verandas, mahogany hardwood floors, and, in a slight departure from the authentic, European-style bathrooms with river rock, open-air showers.

The staff at Qamea, hailing from three local villages, assists guests in selecting from the array of activities—from hiking and scuba diving to spa treatments at the jungle-enshrouded pool. And the lack of commercial influence on the island does not preclude a fulfilling nightlife. Extended, multicourse dinners precede the Meke at the Bure Kalau, a seminightly showcase of Fijian dancing and song. (Click image to enlarge)

Qamea’s ceremonies and staff impart a true taste of Fiji’s culture and welcoming spirit. The final dose of island hospitality, however, is bittersweet: As departing guests board the boat for the Taveuni airport, the resort staff serenades with the Fijian farewell song, “Isa Lei.”
