FrontRunners: Let It Roll
The Daniel Roth il Giocatore Veneziano (www.danielroth.com) invites you to roll the dice on a $452,100 timepiece equipped with two of watchmaking’s oldest mechanisms, the minute repeater and the automaton, which both date to the 17th century. One of the buttons on the side of the watchcase activates the automaton, moving the dial’s engraved image—which is based on Caravaggio’s The Card Players—on seven separate points of rotation to display the dice in any of 504 possible combinations. For the minute repeater, Daniel Roth enlisted musical watch specialist Christophe Claret, who provided a cathedral-gong movement that operates separately from the automaton. Because gamblers often lose track of the time, the ringing repeater may be a most practical feature.
