The Top 10 Toys of Summer: Adventure Traveler

When it debuted 30 years ago, BMW’s GS motorcycle helped spawn a new category of all-terrain travel and adventure bikes. To celebrate three decades of its go-anywhere, do-anything machine, BMW introduced the 2010 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure in March. This latest iteration of the GS line features the most powerful version of BMW’s opposed flat-twin boxer engine yet, boosting power and response on the Adventure to the highest levels ever for a GS bike: 110 hp with a stump-pulling 88 ft lbs of torque. Switchable ABS and Electronic Suspension Adjustment help tame the bike’s considerable power and allow riders to tailor the ride to the terrain on the fly. Other special features—including protection bars, an 8.7-gallon fuel tank, and optional alloy luggage cases—solidify the $17,000 Adventure’s position as this summer’s two-wheeled travel vehicle of choice.
