FrontRunners: Lots and Lots
SEPTEMBER 01, 2011
The sale of Property from the Collections of Lily & Edmond J. Safra (www.sothebys.com), scheduled for October 18 through 21 at Sotheby’s New York, will include 1,500 lots of European furniture, silver, turned ivory, Russian porcelain, and 19th-century watercolors. "It’s a pretty great collection," says Elaine Whitmire, head of Sotheby’s single-owner sales department. Receiving top billing are five 18th-century French lacquer furnishings that include a Louis XVI ormolu-mounted Japanese lacquer commode with a secretaire en suite attributed to Adam Weisweiler. "For five pieces of this quality to come on the market—that hasn’t happened since 1882," says Alistair Clarke, worldwide head of Sotheby’s English & European furniture department.
