$13.1 MILLION

in the late 1860s, prospectors from California unearthed silver ore on Utah’s Flagstaff Mountain. The discovery became the first mining claim in Park City and sent a stream of settlers to the region. About a century later, modern-day prospectors came to Park City in search of powder, and today Flagstaff Mountain is one of the dapper peaks at Deer Valley Resort.

Real estate options at Deer Valley, the region’s most exclusive ski area, are extremely limited. Opportunities include a few sites at Red Cloud, one of three Park City–area communities operated by Talisker, a private club that caters to skiers, golfers, and families. Limited to just 30 estates, Red Cloud is set on pristine meadowland near the peak of Flagstaff Mountain at nearly 9,000 feet.

The recipient of this gift will appreciate the panoramas that such an elevation affords, with 180-degree views of the mountain from the comfort of his or her great room. Hart Howerton, an architectural and planning firm responsible for designs in such destinations as the Hamptons and Sardinia, has envisioned the definitive skier’s haven for this 1.21-acre site. “It’s a gathering place,” says CEO Jim Tinson of his firm’s proposed 9,000-?square-foot design (rendering on previous page). “It’s a place where the family can come together and take advantage of the home year-round.”

Executed in stone and timber, the home, says Tinson, will be the modern equivalent of a 19th-century great camp. The generous great room will not only offer views of the surroundings, but also open to the outdoors with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls. The living space will spill out onto sculptural terraces that descend toward a stone spa grotto set among the aspens and pines. Hot tubs will cascade down the terraces like hot springs.

The house, which Tinson intends as “a lasting family legacy,” will be built predominantly with locally sourced and recycled materials, and such environmentally friendly features as energy-efficient glazing and geothermal heating and cooling. “This is an architecture that is one with the landscape, not imposed on it,” says Tinson.

Paul Duesing, of Paul Duesing Partners, the firm that designed the interiors of the One&Only Palmilla in Mexico, says the decor will match the structure’s natural appearance. “When you enter the home it will feel as if you’re among the trees,” he explains, “which is great in that environment because your living spaces take on all the colors of the seasons.”

In addition to the great room, the house’s spaces will include two kitchens, a home theater, a children’s playroom, a sports room for storing skis and other equipment, a library, and a puzzle room. Four intimate “family suites” will be designed as stand-alone wings, each with its own master bedroom, children’s room, sitting room, fireplace, den, and private terrace. The architects will also incorporate separate guest cabins with covered porches linked to the main house.

Equipped with a Talisker Club membership and four Deer Valley Resort ski passes good for five years, the gift’s recipient will be able to ski directly from the home’s hearth room to seven of the mountain’s lifts. Red Cloud Cabin—one of Talisker’s two on-mountain clubhouses—is also accessible by ski. And after a day on the slopes, the home’s owners can retreat to the hearth room’s changing area before warming up by the space’s bar and fireplace.
