Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur

Part of the Malaysian capital’s massive City Centre complex, the 30-story Mandarin Oriental sits adjacent to a 50-acre park, a six-level mega-mall, and the Petronas Twin Towers, two of the tallest buildings in the world. Although grand in scale—with 643 guest rooms and six restaurants—the Mandarin emits a more residential radiance than its towering glass-and-steel neighbors. The interior design, much like Malaysian culture, draws from Asian and Western styles. Local touches include carved door handles and banisters, gold-leaf screens, and nearly 300 pieces of Malay artwork displayed throughout the hotel. Accommodations Guest rooms and suites come with a choice of city or park view and plenty of natural sunlight. The Presidential Suite on the 30th floor has a panoramic view of the city skyline, as well as a grand master bedroom, separate private dining room, and marble bathroom complete with gym equipment and whirlpool. Facilities A full spa includes 10 treatment rooms and a vitality club, where guests can relax in peace. An outdoor, infinity-edge pool lies adjacent to both cold and hot Jacuzzis, steam rooms, and a sauna. Dining The hotel's six restaurants include Lai Po Heen, which serves classic Cantonese cuisine and dim sum specialties. Concierge Recommends The city of Kuala Lumpur along the Malay Peninsula is home to an interesting mix of rainforests, mountains, and beaches. Have the concierge arrange an all-day excursion of the city in a luxury automobile, stopping for a traditional lunch in the food-hawker stalls of Jalan Alor. Rates From $245 to about $6,100.
